The New England Orienteering Club

Powissett (Hale Reservation)
April 15, 2012
Event Director: Barb Bryant

107 orienteers participated in the Powissett event. It was a beautiful day, warm and sunny.

As I walked around setting out controls the morning of the event, I noticed quite a few changes from the map - new trails, cleared areas and man-made structures. There were a couple of places where the mapped trails didn’t seem to be laid down correctly relative to the contours. I hoped that the White and Yellow course runners would not be confused by these differences. It was a lovely morning to be out walking in the woods, and I was glad to be there.

Congratulations to Bridget Hall, who was not only the first finisher of the day, she was also the fastest finisher on White. The Hall women were particularly speedy: her mom, Kristin, beat everyone else on Green by at least half an hour. It’s great to see kids like Spencer, Ethan, Gil and Naomi out on Yellow. Sadly, Linc had to stop partway through his run on Yellow due to time constraints - but happily, it was in order to prepare for his birthday party - happy belated birthday, Linc!

Powissett 4th Red controlWe misplaced one control on Red. David Wheeler shared his GPS track (right) showing his several attempts to relocate and find the control, until he convinced himself that he was in the right place and the control was nowhere nearby. This brings up an interesting question: how can you as a competitor decide quickly that you are in the right place, the control is not there, and move on? Remember that you always have the right to challenge the control placement; this can be important at bigger events that count toward national rankings. Thanks are due to Dave Yee for rushing back once he realized the control was missing, and putting out a replacement control for later competitors to be able to experience a complete Red course. Our apologies to Red runners who were there before we fixed the control!

NEOC President Pete Lane organized the registration area very effectively: the tables were placed like Conestoga wagons circling a campfire. This reduced crowding of registrants around the outside, while making it easy for meet workers to check in with each other inside the circle. There were different tables for signing waivers, paying, picking up maps, filling out the small white "Safety Card," and clear/check for the electronic punching.

Thanks to Ian Smith for course design and overall organization. I’m grateful to Jeff Saeger, Pete Lane, Joanne Sankus, Isabel Bryant, Dave Yee, Richard Powers, Sam Levitin, Jim Paschetto, Bo Nielsen, and Andy McIlvaine for volunteering before, at, and after the meet. These events only happen because you all help out, and it is much appreciated! Jim Paschetto recently organized training for volunteers interested in learning how to operate the electronic punching software; trainees Andy and Isabel showed that Jim is a good teacher. Jim does an enormous amount of work both with the e-punch equipment and the website, and the more we can help out the better!
