Every year I [Jeff Saeger] try to offer something a bit new and different for the Traverse. A new map segment, unique course design, many times just recruiting another course setter will give the course a different feel. This year I was on my own, and short on time as a month of weekends orienteering and partying had left me with less time than usual.

The course design was new this year. Two Butterfly loops were used. The purpose of these is to break up the field so that there is less “following” and more of the competitors are navigating alone. The first butterfly occurred at the second control. Because of the relatively open and flat terrain, especially on the northern loop, many orienteers could be seen going this way and that, with slower runners being passed by the leaders. The second butterfly was more unbalanced, with one loop about 3 Km. and the other only 800 meters. Getting the long loop last could be a bit disheartening!

Although the runners were quite spread apart at the finish, most made it all the way around. The prizes for completing the course this year was a pair of “Blue Hills Traverse” gloves, perfect for the upcoming winter training sessions.
