Danehy Park, Cambridge, MA
May 6, 2018
Meet Director: Ian Finlayson
Youth Series Event Directors: Pia Webb and Wendy Johnecheck
The second Boston Youth Orienteering Series event of the year took place at Danehy Park in Cambridge this Sunday. Rain threatened all day, but held off and the temperatures were comfortable for running. We had a good turnout with just over 100 starts on the various courses.
Danehy is an open park with many paths and ball fields to keep track of which makes it great for novice orienteers. We saw some very fast times on the courses, but there were also quite a number of people that got turned around on the different paths ending up at the wrong controls. Many runners chose to try a harder course than they would normally attempt knowing that you can’t get seriously lost in the park and could build up confidence for their next orienteering outing. But be aware that orienteering in the real woods will be more challenging!
Today’s event was the first session of our new 6-week training program for kids and teenagers who want to improve their navigational skills and running fitness beyond what the Youth Series has to offer (pre-registration required). The coaches introduced the basics of reading map symbols and how to orient the map to the less experienced participants and worked on compass bearings and route choices with more advanced orienteers.
This was the last Youth Series event of the spring with the next Youth Series event on Sunday, September 23, at Great Brook Farm in Carlisle. There are still plenty of local events every weekend this spring with the next regular NEOC event on Saturday, May 12, at Breakheart Reservation in Saugus. There are also CSU sprint races on Thursday nights, with the next sprint on Thursday May 10th in Franklin Park at the border between Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, and Dorchester. Beginners and more advanced runners are always welcome to NEOC and CSU events and instruction on how to get you started is typically available.
A huge thanks to all the coaches and meet helpers who volunteered to help out at the event rather than going up north for more technical orienteering: Katia Bertoldi, Giovanni Berlanda, Maria Bloom, Barb Bryant, Becky Carlyle, Ethan Childs, Ed Despard, Kristin Hall, Yana and Evgeny Ivanov, Alex Jospe, Roman Nemet, Jim Paschetto, Alex and Rachael Rothman, and Mark Webb. Also a big thanks to my meet co-directors Ian Finlayson and Wendy Johnecheck. The event would not have happened without all of your help!
