Meet Directors: Michael Hughes & Paige Williams
Over 80 people, including a group from UConn, turned out for orienteering amongst the puddingstone cliffs, rocky spots and boulders of Hammond Pond. It was sunny and hot, with temperatures in the mid 80s—a trifle warm for running but very pleasant for the meet helpers and for standing around comparing routes (and errors!). Although Hammond Pond is a small area, it has good potential for both less technical and more technical courses, and rewards those who can stay focused on the details of the area!
For the Meet Directors, this event brought us into the 21st century of orienteering. We offered e-punching and learnt a bit about updating maps in OCAD and using Purple Pen to superimpose courses on digital maps. The software was extremely easy to use and was a great timesaver compared with the days of drawing up master maps and clue sheets. In addition, we had superb help from Jim Paschetto and others in learning how to do an e-punch event. So we would highly recommend trying these things out to anyone else who might be hesitant about making the step into orienteering’s electronic age!
The NEOC club made a great decision during the week before the event: to do away with the rental fee for e-punch sticks. As a result, there was no hesitation about using e-punches from anyone who showed up and so everyone on all courses e-punched. One hiccup, however, for which we apologize, is that there may be a couple of people who are listed as “DNF” in the results despite having successfully completed the course—we probably needed a better system for making people aware of the need to download their times after finishing.
As always, the success of an event depends on the helpers who give so generously of their time. So a big thank you to Connie Nelson, Dan Westerberg, Ray Griner, Lei Quanhong, Alex Jospe, Joanne Sankus and Jim Paschetto. And also to our daughters, Michelle (age 8) and Sarah (age 9), who helped design and check the courses, hang controls, man registration (including giving change for a 100 dollar bill—very exciting!) and post results.

Use RouteGadget (in the Results menu above) to draw your route and see others' routes.
Note: Some of the people marked "DNF" simply neglected to download their results from their finger sticks. Apologies for not making this clear to those new to e-punch.
