In addition to some rare pockets of New England old-growth forest, and a ski slope gearing up for the winter season, Wachusett Mountain State Reservation offers quite an orienteering challenge. The map features a mix of terrain: some areas of intricate rock detail, other areas of complicated contours, and still other areas of vague hillside. Most of the map is light green, reflecting an understory of beech trees, but with the foliage off the trees, visibility will be decent. Although the map dates from the 90s, the portion we are using in the south is generally in good shape. In designing and test-running courses, the course setter made minor map updates (beginner course areas), updated vegetation runnability (intermediate and advanced course areas), or moved controls or re-designed courses to avoid out-of-date areas. All courses will get close enough to hear, and in some cases see, the two 15MW wind turbines operated by Princeton Municipal Light.
Our thanks to Massachusetts DCR and the Wachusett park staff for assistance in bringing a formal orienteering event back to Wachusett Mountain for the first time in 15+ years.
