The BYOM and Introduction to Orienteering training at Auburndale Park were a great kick-off to the 2023 orienteering season with New England Orienteering Club.

Participants in the Introduction to Orienteering program braved the cold, 40 degree weather, to learn the basics of orienteering with an instructor, then had the chance to try a white, yellow, or a few sprint courses. A huge thank you to Xevi, Dorina, Joanne, Masha, Ellie, Mark, Karen and Jim for helping to inspire new orienteers with instruction, sign in, and control set up and pick up. In total we were able to introduce 40 people to the sport of orienteering with pin punching and QR-code courses. A special thank you to Mark and Karen for bringing the tent canopy and flags for the courses – I’m glad your flight got you home on time for our event!

The BYOM participants had a few additional days to get out on the courses. Those that skipped Saturday were able to enjoy warmer weather. An accessible white course, a challenging yellow course, and 2 sprint courses rounded out the offerings for the BYOM. The sprint courses were designed with completely different controls, and many people took advantage of that and ran both courses. Mere seconds separated many runners in their final results on the sprint courses.

Thanks to everyone that came out and enjoyed the scenery along the Charles River in Newton, and thanks to Newton Parks and Recreation for helping to co-sponsor the event.
