Boojum Rock Egg Hunt, Medford, MA
April 24, 2011
Meet Directors: Wendy Johnecheck & Ian Finlayson
When we first chose Sunday 24th for an event at Boojum rock, we didn’t realize that it happened to be Easter Sunday. We also didn’t know that Boojum Rock was named after the Lewis Carroll poem “The Hunting of the Snark.” Now, in retrospect it seems like an appropriate location for an Egg Hunt themed event. In the poem a Snark hunting party arrive in a strange land. One of the group, the Baker, recalls a warning that, if your Snark turns out to be a Boojum, then you will softly and suddenly vanish away. While a healthy number of orienteers showed up to enjoy the Sunday sunshine, no one vanished. Luck was truly on our side, since several people challenged themselves with a second – often more technical course.
There was a limited course selection on offer at the event. We had an Egg White, an Egg Yolk, a Brown and a Green course. The Green and Yolk courses were by far the most popular. Several folks tried their first Brown course, and the feedback that was offered was that this was enjoyable even if it was challenging. People also seemed to like the larger scale maps.
As with all orienteering events, this one would not have happened or been nearly as much fun without the great group of people who volunteered their time. Primary among these was Jim Paschetto, who was there at the beginning giving a tutorial in e-punching, and there to the end – picking up the last sign. Thanks are also due to Andy McIlvaine, Barb Bryant and Kristin Hall on registration, Suzanne Belovari for map bagging, child care and egg distribution, David Yee for the e-punch start, finish and results, which also featured a cameo role by Ethan and Bridget Hall. Ann Harrer assisted with packing up, and the Hall family (Andy, Kristin, Bridget and Ethan) and Sam Levitin helped with control pick-up.
We hope to see you all in the woods again sometime soon.
Ian and Wendy
